Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that often begins mildly but can worsen over time. It typically causes persistent redness across the nose and cheeks and in some cases the chin and forehead. Symptoms vary and may include flushing, visible blood vessels (thread veins), spots or bumps, skin sensitivity and, in more advanced cases, thickened skin. These changes can significantly affect quality of life and self-confidence. If you are living with rosacea, you will know how challenging it can be to manage both the physical symptoms and the emotional impact.

Sensitive reactive skin with redness

Light redness on the face, first signs of rosacea.

Phase 1: The skin is prone to flushing and blushing.

Sudden redness outbreaks can be temporary or permanent. The redness is mostly triggered by temperature changes, exercise, hot or spicy food and drinks or as a reaction after facial cleansing.

Redness on the face with visible blood vessels with a pink appearance

Phase 2: This stage starts when the blushing and flushing persists after the trigger has come to an end.

Blood vessels in the face remain open, and the skin looks pink. This is called couperosis or erythrosis and may lead to permanent redness.

Red skin as after a sunburn, phase 3 of rosacea

Phase 3: The face displays lasting redness with a sun-burned or wind-burned look.

You may also feel sensations of burning or swelling, and experience small inflammatory spots (papules or pustules).

Thickening of the skin with a bulbous nose, which represents the most severe phase of rosacea

Phase 4: This is the most severe form of rosacea.

Your skin progressively thickens and you might feel intense flushing, inflammation, burning sensations and even pain. Some people also suffer from an enlarged, bulbous nose

This phenomenon mostly affects people with light skin and bright eyes, predominately from northern Europe. It starts around 25-30 years old, and peaks after 45. Women are more affected than men, although men are more likely to develop severe forms of rosacea.

Can the sun aggravate Rosacea?

Yes, the sun is known to exacerbate rosacea. The UVB rays can increase VEGF secretion (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), responsible for dilatating and weakening cutaneous blood vessels. UVA rays also play a role in rosacea, particularly inflammation. They are responsible for damaging the skin’s superficial vascularised levels, and for accumulating agents responsible for inflammation -  cytokines, chemokines and others.

UV rays thus maintain the skin in a state of inflammation and are responsible for dilatating blood vessels. To avoid this, make sure you use sunscreen daily. It is recommended that you choose a dermatologically tested sunscreen with very high broad-spectrum protection. Ideally, choose a rosacea-friendly sunscreen, which may contribute to reducing the redness on your face or, at the very least, avoid aggravating it.

BIODERMA’s formulation experts have developed Sensibio AR+ CC Cream SPF50+, a high-protection tinted moisturiser designed specifically for skin prone to rosacea and redness. The lightweight, colour-correcting formula helps to visibly neutralise redness and even out the complexion, combining advanced sun protection with skincare benefits in one daily step.

Sensibio AR+ CC Cream SPF50+ draws on BIODERMA’s dermatological expertise and features the patented New Rosactiv™ 2.0 PATENTED* TECHNOLOGY.
