Photoderm renewal : Better protection and formulation for lasting skin health

Recent years have seen awareness and knowledge grow about the sun’s effect on skin and the weaknesses in sun protection – both for skin and the environment. Laboratoire Bioderma has drawn on its 40 years of experience in biology and dermatology to renew its Photoderm range. It now empowers your skin to better defend itself in the sun and provides improved broad-spectrum protection.

All products in the Photoderm range are supported by four pillars that care for your skin within its ecosystem. You benefit from our high-technology sun protection SUN ACTIVE DEFENSE, our dermatological skin care expertise, ingredients and formulation for all uses and climates, and respect for aquatic environments.

Despite the increase in the use of sunscreens offering a high sun protection factor (SPF), the number of skin cancers did not decrease correspondingly. The SPF factor makes reference to protection provided against UVB rays, which prevents skin from burning. However, dermatologists discovered that prolonged exposures to UVA rays are what weaken skin. UVA rays penetrate deeper and can cause oxidative stress, producing lesions that can turn into premature skin ageing and a risk of cancer. Sunscreens offering broad-spectrum protection, meaning UVB and UVA rays, are better at keeping skin healthy.

To help prevent damage, all face sunscreen formulas provide SPF 50+ protection (except Photoderm AKN mat: SPF 30) and include a strong shield against UVA rays. For visible signs of an imbalance in the skin, such as spots, redness or pigmentation problems, the Photoderm range offers face sunscreens that include a biological response with active ingredients that address the specific needs of each. All Photoderm products have been clinically tested and demonstrate proven effectiveness and tolerance for each type of skin.

Very Water-Resistant Body Products

All Photoderm body sunscreens meet the ‘Very Water Resistant’ certification, meaning the sun protection factor stays 50% above the stated number after four periods of bathing lasting 20 minutes each. After getting out of the water, they can be reapplied to wet skin, without whitening. This also means that Photoderm sunscreen stays on your skin, so that salt and freshwater environments are respected.

Protection for All Climates

The part of your body that is the most visible and expressive is your face it also receives the most sun exposure. Bioderma’s sunscreen products are formulated to be comfortable to wear in even the highest humidity and hottest conditions, without stinging the eyes.

As ecobiologists and a NAOS brand, Laboratoire BIODERMA pays particular attention to testing the ecotoxicity of finished formulas that are in direct contact with salt and freshwater ecosystems. All selected filters and final formulas have been tested on corals, marine algae and freshwater plankton, three species representative of aquatic biodiversity. NAOS commits to aquatic ecosystems in three ways:

Photoderm products are respectful of aquatic ecosystems: both fresh and salt water, and have minimal impact on both corals, marine algae and freshwater plankton.

NAOS assesses each ingredient’s ecotoxicological profile, including UV filters, and scrupulously selects those that will minimise a product’s impact on the environment. NAOS’ long-term objective is to increase skin’s natural ability to protect itself from the harmful effects of the sun and continues to search for new ingredients that can be used in sun protection products.

NAOS supports Andromède Océanologie, a group of marine biologists that fights for the regeneration of Posidonia, underwater meadows capturing four to five times more carbon than other flowering plants. Andromède Océanologie’s main actions include:
